In the last few years, the pandemic has made clear how economic crises affect women, and it has reminded us of the need for programs to assist women in motherhood. The programs must seek to assist them holistically in their development. I have said that âwomen urgently need to be helped in caring for their children and not be discriminated against in terms of pay and work, or with the loss of work because they are women.â[9] We must be guided by the conviction that if we can provide women with these favorable conditions, they will be able to decisively contribute to the reconstruction of the economy and future societies. Women make the world a more beautiful and a more inclusive place.
Still, amid these problematic situations, women have made a way to move history forward. I am not exaggerating when I say there are thousands of everyday examples of women raising their children alone, which continue to be a fount of inspiration for millions of people worldwide.
Women have a unique sensibility for social situations; there is commitment and generosity, which we rarely see in men. Babetteâs Feast is a Danish film I like very much. Through a series of actions by the main female character, we see a metaphor of fraternity and witness how one person can change reality solely by caring for others. I think it is an example of the female sensitivity to care for others and of womenâs service to the common good.
This sensibility is often best prepared to lead movements of struggle and revitalization. As a result, we have seen resistance, especially in leading nonviolent activities, such as that shown by Leymah Gbowee and thousands of Liberian women. In recent years, these women, with their prayers and peaceful protests, advocated for peace negotiations when the conflict in Liberia was at its highest levels, leading to the conclusion of the second Liberian civil war.
Servant of God Dorothy Day fought for social justice in the United States in the twentieth century and made the plight of the oppressed her own. Dorothy Day was the founder of the Catholic Worker movement and is often made invisible by wider historiography for the mere fact of being a woman. However, her social activism, passion for justice, and commitment to the cause of the oppressed were directly inspired by the Gospels, her faith, and the examples of the saints.
Geneviève Jeanningros is a French nun who lives here in Rome and whom I admire. She comes every week to my Wednesday audiences, whether it is cold or hot. She does terrific work with the poor and the sick on the outskirts of the city. In 2015 I had the chance to visit Jeanningros and her team, and I was touched by their great effort for the needy. You can perceive in them a religious sensibility.
I have recently been told of another woman from Latin America who, moved by her faith and sensitivity, embarked on a transforming mission for her country. The Honduran MarÃa
